Surviving the Peak: Optimizing the Cloud to Prevent Downtime
In this webinar, I talked about the challenges arising due to a system downtime within the context of online retail , how to address them, and what processes and architectures to put in place to prevent them in the future.
An Egen webinar, recorded ahead of the 2020 peak retail season. I presented alongside Egen co-founder Nandita Potini, moderated by Megan Larson.
The premise was simple enough to state and hard to act on:
System uptime is critical. Whether you’re already in the cloud or considering a hybrid solution, one thing is clear: if your system isn’t ready for peak periods, you will be losing revenue and customers. Optimizing your cloud data and infrastructure will increase system uptime and deliver a seamless customer experience from first touch to the last mile.
Peak season is where architectural shortcuts come due. A system that runs comfortably for eleven months can fall over on the one weekend that pays for the year, and when a single wrong keystroke costs six figures in lost revenue, the interesting question is not how to scale up but what to have already decided before traffic arrives.
We walked through the cloud capabilities that keep a retail system standing under load, what to put in place ahead of time rather than during an incident, and how the same decisions apply whether you are already running in the cloud or still working out how to get there.
